Ride Safe on the Golden Gate!

This is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful rides around. Cyclists have toll-free access to the Golden Gate Bridge sidewalks 24-hours a day. There are more cyclists using the Bridge than ever before, which is good news for congestion relief, air quality and physical fitness. But it also means that cyclists must be extra cautious and patient when riding on the Bridge sidewalks.

The safety railing provides increased safety, yet there is still the potential for crashes if cyclists don't ride responsibly. By following the guidelines below, we can keep the Bridge a safe and enjoyable place for everyone:

  1. Yield to pedestrians and always ride at safe speeds.
  2. Keep right, unless passing, and call out "on your left" or ring your bell before passing a pedestrian or another cyclist. If there's not ample room to pass, wait until oncoming traffic has passed before proceeding (giving those behind you adequate warning first).
  3. Use extra caution around the towers as it can be very difficult to see around crowds and tight corners.
  4. Use caution when passing construction equipment or rounding corners, especially in variable wind conditions.
  5. Stop only in the viewing areas on either side of the Bridge or out of the path of other traffic, and be mindful of cyclists behind you.
