Vehicle Restrictions

The Golden Gate Bridge roadway consists of a total of six roadway lanes. The number of roadway lanes dedicated to a given direction of traffic flow can be modified several times throughout the day to accommodate shifting traffic patterns. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has policing authority on the Bridge.

There are two WIDE LANES available at the Toll Plaza: toll lanes #1 and #2 are located on the right-hand side (west) of the Toll Plaza when traveling south. The WIDE LANES are 11 feet, 10 inches wide. All other toll lanes are 9 feet, 2 inches wide. The height limit through the Toll Plaza is 14 feet, 6 inches.

All vehicles crossing the Bridge must be in compliance with California Vehicle Code. The speed limit on the Bridge is 45 miles per hour (MPH) and the speed limit traveling south through the toll plaza is 25 MPH. The speed limit traveling north through the toll plaza is 35 MPH, with an advisory speed of 25 MPH.
