Vehicle Restrictions
The Golden Gate Bridge roadway consists of a total of six roadway lanes. The number of roadway lanes dedicated to a given direction of traffic flow can be modified several times throughout the day to accommodate traffic patterns.SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING UPCOMING VEHICLE RESTRICTION: Beginning in approximately June 2010, the weight of vehicles and loads crossing the Golden Gate Bridge will be restricted to legal limits; there will be no extra weight legal limit vehicles permitted. This restriction is being imposed as a result of the ongoing seismic retrofit work and is anticipated to remain in effect for approximately one year.
Trucks, Trailers, Buses, Recreational Vehicles are allowed on the Golden Gate Bridge as long as:
- They are driven across the Bridge using only the curb lane of the roadway (right hand roadway lane). The curb lanes of the roadway are 11 feet wide; the other roadway lanes are 10 feet wide.
- When traveling south through the toll plaza, use only the two right hand toll lanes; these toll lanes are wider (11 feet, 10 inches) than the other toll lanes (9 feet, 2 inches) in the toll plaza.
- When traveling south through the toll plaza, the vehicle height does not exceed 14 feet, 6 inches.
There is an underpass for pedestrians and vehicles under the toll plaza; the vehicle height limit underpass is 11 feet, 10 inches.
Oversize vehicles and vehicles transporting explosives, corrosives or flammable cargoes must stop on the shoulder on either the north or south side of the Bridge before entering the Bridge roadway lanes and contact the Toll Office, using the yellow emergency call box, to arrange for an escort vehicle which is provided at no cost. Please note that escorts are not provided on weekdays between 6:30 am and 9:30 am and 4 pm and 7pm, or during extremely heavy traffic. Oversize vehicles must advise the Toll Office of the total width, height and length of their vehicle/load and the product(s) they are transporting.
Other Exclusions: None of the following shall be permitted to enter upon the Bridge roadway and its approaches:
- Animals which are being led, ridden or driven, even though tethered or harnessed, with the exception of service animals, such as guide dogs, signal dogs and service dogs.
- Vehicles with metal tires or deflated, flat pneumatic tires.
- Pushcarts, wheelbarrows and similar vehicles.
- Motor-driven vehicles with tires less than 2-1/2 inches in width.
- Bicycles are only allowed on the sidewalks.
- Other vehicles which, in the judgment of the General Manager of the District, are likely to endanger persons or property, or to render use of the Bridge unsafe.
U-Turns: Vehicles shall not make U-turns on the Bridge or approaches, except with permission of and under the direction of a member of the California Highway Patrol or an authorized employee of the District.
Tire Changes: Changing of tires on the Bridge is prohibited.
